Stephen Gaster
Stephen Gaster, born Oct. 19, 1800, died April 5, 1860. Gaster donated the land for the cemetery; he was a large land owner in Drew County, and one of its more prominent citizens.

Legend has it that Stephen Gaster donated the land with the understanding that a bottle of whiskey be kept on top of his marker. Supposedly a bottle of whiskey was encased in concrete and affixed to the top of the grave marker. The day I took these pictures, I noticed that the concrete container, shaped like a pitcher, had been knocked off, probably by vandals. I could not resist the temptation to examine it. I shook it, but I didn’t hear anything liquid. It is a shame this local legend has been damaged.

Minnie Gaster
Minnie Gaster, daughter of Stephen and Hallie Gaster, born December 19, 1872, and died October 17, 1876. I believe this is the grandchild of Stephen Gaster who donated land for the cemetery.
